6 string bass

Introduction

The 6-string bass has grown significantly today. Far from being a passing fad, it has become part of our landscape.

Advantages: a higher range than the 4 and 5 strings, you can play chords richer and can play two octaves without changing of position.

Inconvenients: more strings, thus a broader neck. You must relearn scales, and arpeggios and your right hand technique.

After that, it's your choice if you're tempted or not the adventure.

To avoid a purchase that you regret, I advise you to try before you buy.

Ibanez SR1006 Prestige

Scale and arpeggio

You will find below the C major scale across the neck. Feel free to sing notes same time as you play, you'll work your ear at the same time.

After working the scale, I propose the arpeggio, always in C:

Lesson #01

To begin this series of video lessons, I propose a groove punctuated with chords in F major.

The chords are played on two higher strings, and groove on both lower strings. You will notice that the groove is dampen by the palm of the right hand.

The chords are: F maj7 / Bb maj7 / F maj7 / C7

Lesson #02

In this second video lesson, we will explore the highs with a little melody in A major.

The chords are: A / D / A / E7

Bruno Tauzin - « Ancien monde »

This third composition for 6 string bass is called "Ancien monde".

Style John Patitucci

A jazz lick inspired by the great John Patitucci.

On Bmaj7 chords, I use B majord scale, and on G maj7 chords, I use G major scale.

Bruno Tauzin - « La ballade de Brahms »

Here an arrangement of a Brahms' ballad with my new 6 string bass, an Ibanez SR5006.

John Myung - Erotomania

Here an interesting riff of John Myung (Dream Theater).
